Do Japanese youth believe in God? Survey

Do Japanese youth believe in God? Survey

Often I’ve heard about how Japan is a very hard to start a church and that young people are not interested in God. My experience has not been like that at all. I’ve experienced youth in Japan to be very friendly and open to new things- for better or worse. We decided to go and ask young people what they think about God for ourselves. I had a feeling it would be very different than what I heard. Here are the questions and answers. ( Survey done by Lifehouse Osaka)

There were over 200 young people ( mostly students) interviewed on the street in Osaka over a period of about a week.

Question one: Do you believe in “God”?

95% said yes. 5% said no.

Question two: Do you believe He is good or bad.

Of those who answered yes to the previous question 90% said he is good!

Question three: If you could know God Personally, would you want to?

Of the people who answered yes to the first question 90% said yes!

Question four: What’s your biggest fear? Top answers

1. I won’t be able to find a job

2. Economy.

3. Uncertainty about future.

Question Five: If you could ask God one Question what would it be?

1. What is my destiny?
2. Why am I alive?
3. What happens when I die?
4. What about my future?

Some more interesting insights were.

1. The people who rejected the concept of god were most over 30 and those who accepted the reality of God were mostly under 30.

2. This doesn’t mean that people are really willing to follow Jesus. It just means their hearts are open to hearing about the gospel from a friend.

3. If we make genuine friendships with people, young Japanese want to see our lives and hear what God has done in our lives. What an amazing opportunity to share Jesus with this generation!

4. A lot of the surveys led to really great conversations about what young people believe. We were surprised how open and honest young people were. There was very little negativity about spiritual things. But also a very vague understanding. This isn’t surprising given that out of the 7,700 or so churches in Japan very few have regular ministry to youth. This is something we are excited about being part of the solution to. Just a part, but we are excited about it!

If you are in Japan to share Jesus, I hope this is encouraging to you. Let’s Continue to share the good news about Jesus with our cities all over Japan!

This is Japanese, but a blog about what happens at Lifehouse Church. If you can read Japanese, check out it

Lifehouse Kids Program church

“I was sick for so long that it just became normal. I never expected to get any better”

This is what I’ve heard many times. Again on Sunday I heard this from a girl in Lifehouse Osaka Named Ai.

My story Ai healing Japan Church
When she was a little girl the doctors found a hole in her lungs which was growing. The hole stopped the oxygen from circulating through her body so she frequently spaced out or passed out.

As it became more serious the doctors saw only one end. After falling unconscious for several days at 12 years old they told the her the news. “you won’t live to see 20 years old”

Healing Believe God Japan

The news sent her into a deep fear. The fear of possibly not waking up when she went to sleep.
The symptoms became worse over the next few years and it seemed like her life was on the countdown.

One day, a friend bought Ai to church.
At first she didn’t know what to think but she started to believe in Jesus over time.
Then after that dared even to believe that Jesus could heal her the way he healed other people in the bible
That faith grew and grew.
Her small group was praying for her. She was praying. Everyone was praying.

Then some thing happened.
As she woke up one morning, she felt something was different and was very excited. At this point her faith had developed and Ai was convinced God would heal her.
That day was a doctors check up so she went with hope.
The doctors took a lot longer than usual in examining her again and again looking confused.
Then sat down to tell Her.
” I don’t understand but the hole is gone”
” You lungs are fine”
” This is a miracle!..”

Ai shared her faith her doctor at that moment.
After being healed Ai started to get a vision to help other people. Not just focusing on surviving anymore- she was able to start really living!!

Best conference for men In Osaka!

Best conference for men In Osaka!

When I was younger I looked up to men and really want to be a great man.
Many of those I looked up to had poor attitudes and destructive habits which made me dissolutioned.

When I stepped in church at 14 I remember seeing young men who were very strong and “cool” and seemed like they were really going somewhere in life. I didn’t realize it at the time but I found out later that Jesus helped them become strong men.
They weren’t really trying to be cool but they were their lives were attractive to me because of what they believed in.

Those guys became friends with me: a 14 year old cowboy. They didn’t have to but they hung out with me, picked me up and took me to church or to a house party. They believed in me. And that gave me great confidence as a young person. They didn’t manipulate me or control me- they spoke to me about my potential and what I needed to do to get there.

Lifehouse Osaka Mens Conference

Now at 29, I get the same opportunity to believe in the next generation Here at Lifehouse Osaka. I now understand why all those guys spent time with me. They saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself.

Recently we did a men’s conference in Osaka Morinomiya near Osaka castle. It’s an event that we do every year for men and it’s been growing every year. It’s a chance to spend time with other guys who young guys can look up to and inspire/ challenge each other all while having a good laugh and getting the competitive juices going on the court.

Lifehouse Osaka Mens Conference

We played a huge futsal tournament on top of the roof of the new Q’s mall in Morinomiya. It’s a cool place with a running track and a futsal court in the open air.
It was spilt into area. Tennoji/ umeda/ Kobe.
I wish I could say Umeda came out on top! But it was a close game. It was a 12 year old kid with mad skills who scored the winning goal in the final after the final whistle, stole the victory right out of hands!! But you can’t be mad loosing like that.

Lifehouse Osaka Mens Conference

After footsal the boys had lunch ( meat of course) and headed over to Osaka Jo park to hear some sessions from our pastors.

We did 3 quick sessions on 3 big subjects that affect guys.
1. Sex
2. Money.
3. Power.
( I think the girls did faith hope and love for their conference..)

Lifehouse Osaka Mens Conference

I saw guys really getting vision for their future in that short time. Thinking deeply about why they are here on planet earth and what God wants them to do with this life we have been given by Him.

What am I doing in my life that will last forever?
That was one question out of 4 life questions which really spoke deeply to a lot of guys. Another was: Are today’s decisions lining up with tomorrow’s dreams?

Lifehouse Osaka Mens Conference

I love that at Lifehouse church guys will come along side each other, smash each other in sports then talk real with each other about doing something big for God. This is the kind of positive environment I want my son to grow up in.

We don’t just do this in Osaka, But also in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Kansai, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Sendai And more!

Lifehouse Osaka Mens Conference

After crowning the MVP the guys split to hit up the onsens.

Best conference for men ever! And it’s only getting bigger and better. I hope next time you can come along. Or even better just come along to church where this happens every week! Check it out.

Hong Kong: skyscrapers, waterfalls, rooftop restaurants and Lifehouse Church.

Hong Kong: skyscrapers, waterfalls, rooftop restaurants and Lifehouse Church.

Landing in Hong Kong is one my favorite places to land. The airport is beautiful. When you step outside its everything I grew up with in Australia ( the delicious snacks and the large size potions of food!) and everything I love about Asia all in one.

With 4 people it’s just as easy to grab a taxi into the city as it is to take the high speed train which takes around 30-40 minutes from memory.
On the way into the city the infrastructure is quiet astounding. The engineering feats that it took to build those incredibly large bridges and highways, shipyards and buildings- wow!

Everytime I go to Hong Kong I see things in a new way. The city is full of surprises.

I always loved the jam packed Mongkok and Tsim Sha Tsui. The young people. The pace. I even bought some wall paper for my house and carried it around with me over my shoulder!!

But last time I was there I got to see the very beautiful other side of the island which has some of the most amazing views anywhere. The beaches look totally untouched. A very different change of pace from the Central (the main area on HK island)

We found a “private” water fall in Sai Wan which is largely unknown and a little bit of a hike through the mountains but totally worth it! Jumping off 20-30 meter rocks into clear running water was something I will never forget.

I was there with a group of guys for a men’s conference. I know- great place for a conference!!
Best part of the trip was heading to Lifehouse Hong Kong. A great bilingual ( English/Cantonese and English/Mandarin) church in Mong Kok.
They had just renovated the 11th floor of a cool commercial building. Sound proofed it for the thumping bass of the edm and pop style worship. Definitely something fresh for Hong Kong.

My wife and I had the best time singing in Cantonese!! Well, trying to sing. As we walked in it was like walking into a cool little cafe/ club. But very clean and full of little arty things that excite someone like me. People greeted us and showed us around.

The pastor Richard Welsh and his lovely wife ( recently married!!) are great friends of ours and made us feel right at home. The screens go from floor to ceiling across the entire back wall. Lights flashing. My 2 year old son was loving it!! There is a kids program but he was so into the music that he just stayed with us for a while and danced!

Richard got up and started praying for people’s needs. I think people who were there the first time were also praying even though they weren’t really “church people.” That didn’t seem to matter.
They took an offering. A typical thing to do in church. Although it was very much a free will thing and I could see people weren’t pressured into anything. Great relaxed atmosphere.
Listening to bilingual preaching may seem slow and not engaging but this was not that! Maybe because the pastors are husband and wife and have the “connection” or maybe just the mc style of back and forward preaching but it was almost like listening to one language if that’s possible!?
Just a bit over an hour service and it was finished. We felt very encouraged and so happy to see what our friends are doing there in Hong Kong.

wooloomooloo-bar-hong-kong

After church we got to go to a place on the 30th floor and have dinner together over looking Wan Chai on HK island. There is also a bar on top of the roof to look over the city. With so many huge buildings my wife was a little nervous to be on top of one, but good thing to know they don’t have earthquakes the way we do in Japan! If you haven’t seen the harbor in Hong Kong, I believe it actually one of the top 3 views in the world so definitely one to check out.

We were only there a few days and I always think it’s not long enough when we fly out. Certainly one of my favorite places in the world.

The sound of the next generation coming

The sound of the next generation coming

This last week was one of the most exciting weeks ever in our church as we gathered our students for what we call Lifehouse SUMMERFEST!

Summerfest Osaka REmix Lifehuose Osaka

Huge tribal wars where campuses battle it out for two days earning points for doing wild and fun challenges like giant water slides, Sumo suit gladiator, bubble soccer and heaps more. Not to mention tribal presentations- A presentation of creativity, craziness and all round fun before the winners are announced.

IMG_2184-2

The purpose of tribes and all the tribal battles is to newer people feel part of the community. To make champions out of people who are usually not in their everyday world and hopefully build deeper friendships which will lead to open hearts.

IMG_2292

What amazed me this summerfest was the hunger and passion for God in these young people. The way they sing and pray with arms high. The way they pray for their friends and their schools is so inspiring! I remember at the night sessions hearing people sing so loud and passionately and thinking, if this is a picture of the next generation, Japan has a very exciting future!

IMG_2378-2

The thing I love about this next generation is how fast they are meeting God and becoming strong. We haven’t seen young people like this before. It really is something that GOD is doing in Japan right now. there was around 50 people at summerfest who had never been to church before and from all the conversations I had and saw, every person was open to Jesus.

IMG_3491

It was also so encouraging to hear some of our Lifehouse Osaka REMIX young leaders preach and share why they have a vision for marriage and why they have decided to stay pure until their wedding. They share with so much conviction! I heard a lot of people who are not christians say how inspired they were by hearing young people talk with such a big vision for their future.

IMG_3377

Ive said many times I really want remix to be a place for dreamers. People who can dream big. And if we are going to really change Japan, they need to dream BIG!!

IMG_3076

Ps Kirby Sato from Lifehouse Tokyo spoke powerfully for three days and around 40 students made some kind of decision to follow Jesus! Thats so exciting to us!! Many of those people are friends from school, Brothers and sisters, old friends and new.

IMG_2967

The other thing I saw was how much our students really love each other. We are in 3 different campuses right now including Lifehouse Tennoji and Lifehouse Kobe ( Sannomiya) and Lifehouse Umeda. Just 18 months ago we were all together, one leadership team and around 5 life groups for students. These says we have 3 strong leadership teams, three locations and around approximately 18 life groups for students.

IMG_3494

Im personally so excited about the next few years of student ministry in Japan. Not only in Kansai but I’m hearing stories all over Japan about students making stronger decisions and stepping up for God like never before!

IMG_3504

Every Week on Sundays we have Remix at 4pm. Its a service targeted at students. Its loud, lots of young  preachers and fun stuff as well as life groups after.

Remix also have their own blog now REMIX OSAKA BLOG

Changing from “me” to “others”

Changing from “me” to “others”

Do you sometimes find it hard to keep up with change? One thing I know never stops changing at Lifehouse is… Things keep changing!

One of those changes is from “me” to “others” focus.

We all have to go through the journey of going from just being a consumer of all the good things about church, to being part of creating that for others. It’s actually a shift in mindset. And there are so many good things about this new way of life, but one thing is for sure- it’s not like the old days.

Sometimes I hear people talk about the good old days of our church. When church was small and everyone knew each other and everyone knew “me” and loved “me” and focused on “me”

When I first came to church, people welcomed me and made me feel part of it. In my teens there were people who made me feel like a hero! I had never experienced anything like this kind of community in my life. People were so focused on ME!

Soon after that I became a leader and I started to see that focusing on others was a key part of growing up. I think because I was still a teenager change was easier. I started to focus on others. I still got encouraged by others at church, but as a team we became more focused on people who didn’t know God and those who were newer. I also learned that the greatest source of my encouragement should come from my personal relationship with God instead of relying on people. This became a strength in my life as leaders taught me how to read the bible and hear Gods voice for myself. I didn’t know everything, but everything I knew I tried to apply and teach other people. Defiantly had some failures, but I felt I was really growing!!

The benefits of changing are actually amazing!! From my experience:
– I got to go the weddings of friends I bought to church. They thanked me for caring enough to share Jesus with them. Their non Christian parents also thanked me.
– I got to hear and be part of stories that I can’t share publicly because they are too personally but I know them and when I see those people my heart sings!!
– I got to see some of the young people in my life groups become pastors, start companies, get married and have children, speak in public, go from depression to joy and more.
– I have prayed for sick people who have been healed!! Amazing miracles.
– I have cried with people who have lost and seen them come thorough pain and back to a life of fulfillment.
– I have laughed all night with people I didnt even know a year ago! Couldn’t imagine not knowing them!
– countless times I have listened to people say to me “God has spoken to me and I’m so excited!”
– I have seen friends receive Jesus and really follow him. This is the greatest Joy.
I could go on and on.

One of the classic situations I’ve seen over 15 years of leadership is when someone has had all the love and support they need, but won’t become a leader ( others focused) for some reason. They get stuck in a place where it’s not all about them anymore and they are not happy about that, but they are not experiencing the joy of being part of helping others. This is THE WORST place to be as a Christian.
The good news is that at any time, any one of us can make the jump, make the commitment to change. Start serving people. Start praying for others. Start leading others. It’s amazing the joy and purpose and the new depth of relationship with God you will find in doing that! You will be actual partnering with God! He is doing most of the work but we get to be part of that. What an honor!!

In recent years lifehouse has multiplied many times and with that comes a lot of change. And with that comes even less focus on me and more focus on others! This process never stops.I found myself confronted with this several times and needed to make personal adjustments to change with the change.

It meant letting go of old ways of doing things.
Things that used to be important that no longer were.
For example: “This is my idea” (ME). I didn’t hear about that (ME). “My idea wasn’t used” (ME).

But as I have continued to change personally I have found a joy in my life have never experienced. A new thankfulness and excitement about life. A fresh passion for God. Renewed vision. A new heart for people!

This constant of me decreasing so God and his purpose in our lives can increase is not something that comes naturally. We need to make decisions to constantly make the jump from “Me” to “others”
This is growing in maturity.

John 3:30 AMP
He must increase, but I must decrease. (He must grow more prominent; I must grow less so)

Lifehouse Conference 2014 In Japan

Coming home from Lifehouse Conference on the train thinking about all the amazing things that happened with our big church family from all over Japan and around Asia.

conference 4

To see so many people young and old, Japanese and internals, English, Japanese all together celebrating jesus was truly amazing. Already Ive heard about people receiving breakthroughs and healing in the worship time alone.

Conference 1

From Osaka and Kobe over 100 people travelled up to Tokyo to be part of the conference and every person received so much from the messages, the fun, new friendships, the atmosphere of faith and presents of God.

Ps Ryan Tan from Victory Manila Church came and spoke several messages to us. He was funny and profound in his heart for university students. I went away inspired and challenges to reach more students because – ” Change the campus, change the nation” Rolica-Binondo

Victory manila has grown to 70,000 people in their church with 6000 small group leaders. It was so encouraging to hear that they are doing very similar things to us but on a much bigger scale because one day we will see the same in Japan!

Conference 6My good friend Richard Welsh, the pastor of our Lifehouse Hong Kong Church also got engaged to his lovely girlfriend- Janice. The whole movement is very Happy for them both!!

If you want to see some of the messages from Conference you can see them all for free on our youtube page here YOUTUBE

A huge highlight for everyone was seeing our japanese Preach so passionately and prophetically into this nation. Its something that always makes me so happy to see! That is why i came to japan 10 years ago!

Until next conference!

Tennoji – the beginning!

Tennoji – the beginning!

April 19 Lifehouse Osaka had a Pre-view service in Tennoji Qs Mall at Rocktown.

Tennoji is a newly Developed area of Osaka which once had a bad reputation but is now a huge growth hub in Osaka and gateway to south. Its also home to the new Abeno Harukas building, The tallest commercial building in Japan. The city is full of youth and young families and people gather from all over the south to this new hotspot.

We believe this is the perfect place for a bible based church who can reach the next generation in Japan. Right now there are very few churches there, and fewer reaching people.

ImageImage

Last weekends Preview was a huge success. Over 100 people came and 30 new people. Most of them students and young adults. For many, this was their first Easter. While the world celebrates most in Japan have never heard the message of Easter. Thats why we are here; to share the amazing new of Jesus and the hope in his resurrection.

From here we are considering how best to reach out to Tennoji though Relationships, Life Groups, and regular services. There is so much potential, and so much work to be done, but this is just the beginning!

lifehouse honoluluLast weekend we went to Honolulu, Hawaii to help start our new church LIfehouse Honolulu. We have a vision t0 reach out to the internationals students there and whoever else who would like to be part of it.

The city is super cool. Just the way the postcards portray it. beautiful beaches, great people and fun nightlife. People there are looking for something new in life. and that’s why we are starting this new church- to show people how to gospel is what they are really looking for . HNL_01

It was also fun to go there with our good friends Josh and yuki O’sullivan who I’ve known for a long time and who also are lead pastors our Lifehouse Yokohama church. Our sons were born in the same week. Hugo and Zion are good buddies, they just don’t know it yet. we managed to get a workout in with the boys while we were there.
